Services for Rosalynn Carter began on Monday
Scheduled observances honoring Rosalynn Carter began Monday with a wreath-laying at her alma mater, Georgia Southwestern State University at the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex.
Family, university officials and leaders of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving attended the tribute. The longtime humanitarian founded the institute to help aid the millions of unpaid caregivers across the nation.
The Carters’ four children, Jack, Jeff, Chip and Amy, attended the service. The pair were married for 77 years.
Remembering Rosalynn Carter
A trailblazer on caregiving, mental health and other U.S. issues, Rosalynn Carter is known for transforming the title of first lady into a full-time job when her husband was elected in 1976. She was the first presidential spouse to hire a full staff and establish an office in the East Wing.
“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” Jimmy Carter said in a statement from the Carter Center. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”
